Fascinating and disheartening article. It's true; when taking standardized tests a few years ago, I thought my essays would be in the best of hands. The difference between "proficient" and "advanced" on the MCAS is the difference between having the Adams scholarship or not having the Adams scholarship. That's thousands of dollars that could help an underprivileged student attend college, based on such an arbitrary process. Quite sickening, really...
It is disheartening, indeed. And regarding money, think of the many millions of school dollars given to private companies to devise and score such tests -- A dubious return on vast investments that we could have used to educate children.
