We've given slavery some of its due, but can anyone tell me why, from the point of view of moral principle, Lincoln thinks the Union of the states is such a big deal?
I think that for Lincoln, the continuing existence of the Union meant that the American people had the ability to reconcile very different beliefs and values. It also proved that a democratic nation, ruled by the people for the people, could survive and even thrive.

I think I touch on this towards the end of my post for this week, although I am having difficulty wording my thoughts on this question properly.
