(WR) Scores on Final Essays

Most of your final essays presented me with a dilemma. Normally when there are significant editing errors I return papers without a score. However, since the semester is over and there is thus no opportunity for revision (and receiving no score for the second essay would entail otherwise undeserved failure in far too many cases), I took the unusual step of giving two scores: the first represents my assessment of the quality of your reasoning, and the second the number of points I deducted for inadequate editing. This compromises my principles, but is the most fair procedure I can devise in the circumstances. I trust you will all be more diligent in editing your writing for future courses -- mine or any of my colleagues'.
